Mahatma Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram is located in Ahmedabad Gujarat, on the Banks of River Sabarmati. The Ashram was opened on June 25, 1915, and Mahatma Gandhi established it. From 1917 to 1930 the Ashram was Karma Bhoomi of Gandhiji. From this Ashram Gandhiji started Constructive work, Education, Champaran Satyagraha 1917, Ahmedabad Mill Strike 1918, Kheda Satyagraha 1918, Rowlatt Act 1919, Khilafat Movement 1919, Non-Cooperation Movement 1920, Khadi Movement 1921 and Dandi March 1930.

History Of Sabarmati Ashram:

The Ashram was Home to Mahatma Gandhi. Sabarmati Ashram is also known as Harijan Ashram.”The meaning of Sabarmati is Tolerance and Patience”.

This Ashram was the Main Centre when Gandhi was struggling for Freedom in India. Mahatma Gandhi Stayed in this Ashram from 1917 to 12 March 1930, finally, he proceeded for the Dandi march to break the Salt Law. Gandhi Left Sabarmati Ashram in year 1933 and promised that he would not return until India won Independence, In the year 1947 India got Independence but in the year 1948 January Gandhi was killed and he never returned to the Ashram

Sabarmati Ashram has simple and aesthetic Architecture, the architect’s name is Charles Correa.

Earlier the Ashram was spread over 120 acres and had 63 Buildings with Numerous Activities. As time went on the Ashram left only 5 acres and 3 buildings they are Hriday Kunj, Vinoba Kutir, and Magan Niwas. Only these 3 buildings are open for Tourists to visit. Other original buildings are torn down. All the other buildings are divided across the road.

PM Modi took the initiative to restore the Sabarmati Ashram:

Now the work has been started to bring the Gandhi Ashram to its original Form. Now there will be changes in routes and the roads are going to be arranged in a way that the buildings made by Gandhiji will be covered in the Ashram Area of 53 acres. The expansion of the Ashram will be From 5 Acres to 50 Acres. Renovations of 36 Buildings. In these buildings, there will be interactive exhibits, Aspects of Gandhi ji, about the Heritage of the Ashram, and also the Ashram will become a world-class memorial Hall so that the visitors will have an amazing experience by visiting this Ashram.

According to the Master plan, the way to reach the Ashram will be changed, and the historical Dandi Bridge will be Renovated. This project will be funded by the Government Of India and also with the help of Trust and Ashram people including Sabarmati Ashram Preservation and Memorial Trust, Sabarmati Harijan Ashram Trust, Sabarmati Ashram Gaushala, Khadi Gramodyog Prayog Samiti, Khadi Gramodyog Mandali.

The restoration of Mahatma Gandhi Sabarmati Ashram will help in keeping Gandhi’s Values and Philosophy alive. This will Inspire the coming Generation.
